The First Prescribed Burn of the Merom Prairie

Page last modified Tuesday, April 09, 2002

On Wednesday March 6th with winds out of the Southwest at 15-18 mph  and humidity at 53% Kenny Pahmeier, Dale Dressler, Ross Gettinger, don Arnett, Mary Arnett, and Susie Larson  performed the second prescribed burn of the Merom Conference Center Prairie. Dale attended workshops on how to conduct a safe and effective prescribed burning at the Morton Arboretum near Chicago and Kenny has extensive experience managing grass fires as a farmer in Sanborn. In addition Dale shared in the responsibility of Managing woodlot and prairie burns while serving as a park naturalist at the Fox Valley Park District in Illinois. Although the winds were gusty, the Bluff lessened their impact in the prairie and on the fire on March 6th for a safe and effective burn.

About a month after the burn one of the prairie grasses is starting to green up.
